A contemporary studio ceramic sculptural figure of a stylised Friesian cow by Lawson Rudge. The sculpture is constructed from raku fired earthenware, featuring a slab-built rectangular body that tapers towards a naturalistic head depicted in a grazing pose. One flank is decorated with circular black spots of varying sizes against an off-white crackle-glazed ground. The reverse flank displays a large, graphic black numeral 2 set within incised curved linear patterns and sgraffito detailing. The figure exhibits characteristic raku effects, including a fine craquelure glaze and areas of oxidised smoking. The hooves, horns, udder, and tail are finished with unglazed, textured surfaces. The piece features a prominent construction seam running along the spine and rear. This lot comprises the ceramic figure only; the wooden shelving shown in the images is not included.
Condition report:
The figure is in good condition with no visible chips, breaks, or restorations to the extremities, including the ears, tail, and teats (photos 1, 2, and 3). The extensive craquelure across the glazed surfaces and the visible construction seams along the spine and rear are intentional features of the raku firing and slab-building process (photos 1 and 4). Surface dust and light cobwebs are present around the horns and neck (photo 3). Minor shelf wear and natural kiln firing irregularities are visible on the unglazed hooves (photo 2).
