This lot comprises two antique copper and brass vessels. The first is a large tapered cylindrical fireside bucket or coal scuttle constructed from wrought sheet copper with a rolled rim and decorative raised horizontal bands. The vessel features two cast brass mounts in the form of lion masks, each supporting a swing-ring handle. The second item is a large copper and brass water jug of haystack form. The tapered copper body is decorated with three rows of horizontal reeding. It is fitted with a heavy brass base band, a brass rim with a hinged spout cover, and a double-cabled brass overhead swing handle. A smaller fixed brass tilting handle is attached to the rear base. There are no maker’s marks or hallmarks visible on either vessel. A small white rectangular adhesive label reading C137R is affixed to the lower body of the fireside bucket.
Condition report:
Both items show significant wear consistent with domestic use and age. The fireside bucket has a visible vertical seam with evidence of verdigris and lead solder repair (photo 3). The copper surface exhibits dark spotting, scratches, and various small dents across the body. The base shows heavy oxidation and surface wear (photo 6). The haystack pitcher shows a structural break at the hinge attachment point on one side of the overhead brass handle (photo 5). There are patches of verdigris and heavy oxidation around the spout and handle joins (photo 4). Dents are visible on the copper body and the brass base band, which also shows surface tarnishing.
