A large Thai style hand-carved wood sculpture depicting a traditional war elephant battle, known as Yuddhahatti. The piece is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood, possibly teak, with polychrome and gilded accents. It features two elephants in active, combative poses mounted to a carved wooden rectangular base with a geometric border. Each elephant carries a mahout on its neck and a royal figure or commander within a decorated howdah on its back. The figures are accompanied by attendants holding tiered ceremonial chatra parasols and a variety of wooden polearms, including ngao halberds and spears, held in integrated racks. The elephants are detailed with carved caparisons, rope harnesses, and tusks that appear to be carved from wood or a similar composite material. No maker’s marks, signatures, or country-of-origin labels are visible on the exterior surfaces of the sculpture or the base.
Condition report:
The sculpture is structurally sound but displays several misaligned and bent wooden shafts on the spears and halberds (photo 1). Small losses and scuffs to the stained and gilded finish are visible on the protruding edges of the howdahs and the headwear of the figures (photos 2 and 4). There are visible dust accumulations within the recessed areas of the carving (photo 5). The wooden base shows surface scratches and wear consistent with handling (photo 1).
