A framed mixed media work on paper, depicting a street scene in the market town of Newton Abbot, Devon. The architectural composition is executed in ink and watercolour washes, featuring the medieval St. Leonard’s Tower in the foreground. To the right, the scene includes the historic Ship Inn and storefronts for businesses including Alan Farndon and Domestic Trading. The work is signed in cursive ink to the lower right. A typed descriptive label is adhered to the verso, providing historical context for St. Leonard’s Tower and The Ship Inn, noting the tower was once part of a chapel demolished in 1836 and that the inn is a contemporary to the tower. The piece is housed behind glass in a light-coloured wood-effect frame with a wide, neutral-toned mount.
Condition report:
The artwork appears in good condition with minor toning to the paper consistent with age. A small patch of white pigment or correction fluid is visible to the lower left of the tower base (photo 1). The frame shows light surface wear to the edges but remains structurally sound. The typed label on the verso is secured with adhesive tape which has yellowed significantly over time (photo 3). Reflections from overhead lighting are visible on the glass in the provided images and do not represent defects to the work itself.
