Estimated price: £8 - £20

Sold for: £26

A pair of two hand-carved figural stools or plant stands in the form of elephants, comprising one larger and one smaller companion piece. Each stool is carved from a solid block of wood with a dark ebonised or black-stained finish. The elephants are depicted in a walking posture with their trunks curled inward towards their bodies. The circular top surfaces are flat and integrated into the backs of the figures. Both pieces feature incised linear textures across the flanks and legs to simulate elephant skin. The smaller stool is decorated with gold-toned highlights on the ears and tusks, and white paint applied to the toes. The larger stool retains a more naturalistic dark finish with lighter pigment visible on the tusks. The undersides are unfinished wood and bear no legible maker’s marks, signatures, or stamps.

Condition report:

Both pieces show visible wear and surface losses consistent with use. The black ebonised finish is chipped and scuffed across multiple areas, notably around the edges of the circular tops, the tips of the trunks, and the feet, exposing the natural light-coloured wood beneath (photo 1 and 2). The larger elephant has a significant vertical shrinkage crack or check visible on the top surface, extending from the centre towards the rear (photo 5). The smaller elephant shows significant paint loss and flaking to the gold-toned ears and white tusks (photo 3). The larger elephant exhibits finish loss on the tusks and ears (photo 4). The undersides show expected scuffing and dirt from contact with the floor (photo 4).
