This lot comprises a pair of novelty metal boxes modelled in the form of military service caps. The items are constructed from silver-plated base metal, likely brass or bronze. The first box features an internal rotating lid mechanism with a directional arrow and stepped apertures, suggesting use as a mechanical dispenser for postage stamps, matches, or small coins. The second box is fitted with a circular mirror on the interior lid, identifying it as a compact or snuff box. One cap is decorated with an embossed badge on the front, depicting a Tudor crown above a circular motif enclosed within a wreath, a style typical of British military or civil service insignia from the early to mid-20th century. No maker’s marks are visible on either piece.
Condition report:
Both items are in aged, used condition with significant surface tarnish and a dark patina throughout. The silver plating shows heavy wear, particularly on the high points and edges, exposing the warmer-toned base metal underneath. The interior mirror in the compact box is heavily foxed and the silvering has degraded. The mechanical dispenser appears structurally intact, though its functionality has not been tested. There are various small surface scuffs and minor indentations consistent with age and handling.
