Estimated price: £5 - £10

Buyer's Premium:

A large rectangular wooden box finished in a dark mottled reddish-brown lacquer. The hinged lid features gold maki-e decoration depicting several overlapping open fans, known as sensu. These fans contain detailed landscape scenes including Mount Fuji, traditional Japanese pavilions, and pine trees. The composition is further embellished with various floral sprays, specifically large chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms. This item is characteristic of Japanese export lacquerware produced for the Western market during the late Meiji (1868-1912) or early Taisho (1912-1926) periods. The interior is finished in a dark, slightly textured lacquer. A metal lock mechanism is present on the front, although no key is included. The box contains an incidental vintage metal watercolour tin by the English company Reeves.

Condition report:

The box is in fair to good antique condition. Significant chipping and lacquer loss are evident along most edges and corners of both the lid and the base, exposing the underlying wooden substrate. The top surface shows various light scuffs, fine scratches, and general wear to the gold decoration consistent with age and use. The interior exhibits minor wear and some accumulated debris. Hinges appear intact and functional. No key is present for the lock.
