A Victorian-style wheel or banjo-shaped aneroid barometer featuring a case constructed from dark-stained oak with a prominent grain. The case is designed with a shaped pediment featuring scroll carvings and a matching scrolled base. The main circular dial is silvered with an engraved decorative foliate centre and is protected by a glazed brass bezel. The scale is graduated from 28 to 31 inches of mercury, with weather indicators including Stormy, Much Rain, Rain, Change, Fair, Set Fair, and Very Dry. The dial features a black indicator hand and a secondary brass setting hand adjusted via a bone-coloured knob situated below the dial. Positioned in the neck of the case is an inset thermometer with a silvered Fahrenheit scale ranging from 40 to 120 degrees. The word Change is engraved in decorative script at the top of the main dial. No maker’s mark is visible.


Condition report:

The barometer shows general wear consistent with age and use. There are minor surface scuffs and scratches to the oak case. The silvered dial and thermometer scale exhibit light oxidation and tarnishing. The brass bezel shows minor surface wear. The working order of the aneroid mechanism and thermometer is untested.
