Buyer's Premium:

This lot comprises two items of gold jewellery: an amethyst bar brooch and an Edwardian equestrian-themed stick pin.

The bar brooch features a central oval-cut purple gemstone, likely an amethyst, measuring approximately 8mm by 6mm. The gemstone is secured in a rub-over bezel setting decorated with a fine milgrain edge, mounted upon a simple tapered bar of rose-tinted yellow gold. The brooch is secured on the reverse by a hinged metal pin and a traditional C-clasp. Although the mark is rubbed it appears to be 15ct gold.

The Edwardian stick pin is designed with an equestrian motif, featuring a detailed horseshoe and a whip with an attached safety chain. Crafted from 9 carat yellow gold, the reverse of the horseshoe is stamped with hallmarks. These include the maker’s mark C.B.L (possibly for Charles Benjamin Lyon), the gold purity marks 9 and .375, the anchor symbol for the Birmingham Assay Office, and the date letter k, which dates the piece to 1909. The pin shank is straight with a spiralled section to assist with grip.

Amethyst bar brooch weight: 2.48g
Stick pin weight: 0.95g.

Condition report:

The amethyst bar brooch is in good antique condition. The gemstone exhibits some natural inclusions visible under magnification and minor surface wear to the facet edges. The metalwork shows light surface scratches and wear consistent with age and use. The stick pin is in excellent antique condition with the safety chain remaining intact and the pin shank straight. The hallmarks on the reverse of the stick pin are clear and legible.
