Estimated price: £5 - £10

Buyer's Premium:

A diverse group of functional containers of predominantly British origin, comprising various glass and stoneware examples. The collection includes a range of forms such as milk bottles, mineral water bottles, pharmaceutical or apothecary vessels, inkwells, and storage jars.

Identifiable items include a dark olive-green glass Codd-neck bottle with embossed cursive script for J. Smith and Company of Alnwick, Northumberland, and a clear glass bottle embossed for Kelshall of Winsford. The group also features a salt-glazed stoneware bottle for V. Elliott of Plymouth, decorated with a circular black transfer trade mark.

Several clear glass milk bottles are present, including examples embossed for Sheffield and one featuring blue transfer-printed branding for a regional dairy. Small vessels include multiple inkwells, such as a hexagonal aqua glass example and several small salt-glazed stoneware ink pots in buff and ferruginous brown glazes. Construction methods across the collection include mold-blown glass with embossed lettering, machine-pressed glass, and traditional salt-glazed stoneware.

Condition report:

The collection is in generally fair to good antique condition. Most items show significant surface dust, internal residue, and light surface scratching consistent with being excavated or long-stored. One hexagonal aqua glass inkwell has a prominent chip on its rim. The V. Elliott stoneware bottle shows a stable hairline or firing crack near the base. Minor fleabites are visible on the rims of several glass bottles, and some examples exhibit clouding or glass sickness.
