A pair of Victorian Gothic Revival side chairs constructed from oak. Each chair features an arched backrest with pierced and carved Gothic tracery, comprising three lancet-shaped apertures positioned below a central quatrefoil motif. The chairs are designed with solid planked seats having chamfered front corners. They are supported by ring-turned front legs and square-section raked rear legs. The design is consistent with late 19th-century British furniture following the Gothic Revival movement popularised by architects and designers such as A.W.N. Pugin. No maker’s marks or stamps were identified during cataloguing.
Condition report:
The chairs are presented in as-found condition, exhibiting significant signs of age and usage. Both pieces show heavy surface scratching, scuffing, and water staining to the finish, particularly evident on the seats and backrests. One seat shows visible separation between the planks. Professional restoration, including cleaning and refinishing, is recommended.
