A silver-plated flatware service by William Mappin and Son of Sheffield, presented in its original fitted wooden canteen. The service is part of the Insignia Plate range and features a classic design with raised parallel ridged borders along the handles. The set comprises table and dessert knives, table and dessert forks, soup and dessert spoons, and several serving implements. The majority of the pieces are stamped on the reverse with the mark INSIGNIA PLATE and a circular maker stamp containing the letters W M, A 1, and SON. The A 1 designation indicates a superior grade of silver plating. The knife blades are marked MADE IN ENGLAND within a rectangular box. The wooden canteen is fitted with a red Tarnprufe processed lining, designed to prevent the silver from tarnishing. No monograms or personal inscriptions are present on the set.
Condition report:
The service is in good condition overall, exhibiting light surface scratches and minor signs of use consistent with age. The silver plating remains bright and well-maintained across the collection. The wooden canteen shows some minor scuffs and age-related wear to the exterior finish but remains structurally sound. The interior fabric lining is well-preserved and clean.
