A collection of hardcover volumes from The King’s England topographical series, edited by Arthur Mee and published by Hodder and Stoughton. The set comprises various county volumes in original publisher’s cloth bindings of blue, black, and red. Numerous volumes retain their original pictorial dust jackets in both the earlier dark-toned versions and the later teal-coloured variants featuring a stylised wave motif. Identified titles include Surrey, Norfolk, Sussex, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Lake Counties, Suffolk, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Kent, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Essex, Lancashire, Cambridgeshire, and Leicestershire and Rutland. The collection is supplemented by a uniform set of several volumes in orange cloth with gilt-decorated spines and miscellaneous items including a Ward Lock Red Guide for West Cornwall and The Wolf That Never Sleeps: A Story of Baden-Powell.
Condition report:
The collection exhibits general age-related wear. The dust jackets are heavily worn with frequent chipping, tears, and significant loss at the spine ends. The cloth boards show rubbing to the extremities and occasional fading. Some volumes show sunning to the spines where jackets are absent. Internally, there is evidence of age-toning and occasional light foxing.
