This collection comprises approximately 10 phonograph cylinder records from the early 20th century, primarily 2-minute wax and early composition types. The majority of the collection consists of Edison Gold Moulded Records in their original cardboard storage canisters. These canisters feature the portrait of Thomas Edison and text for the National Phonograph Co. Ltd, Clerkenwell Rd, London E.C., with a copyright date of 1903, indicating production for the British market. Identified titles and artists found on the canister lids include Edison No. 9052, The Rosary, performed by the Knickerbocker Quintette; Edison No. 13509, Take me back to London Town, performed by music hall star Miss Victoria Monks; and Edison No. 9604, Heidelberg from The Prince of Pilsen. Also present is a Clarion Record, a British cylinder brand, in a grey canister, and an orange-topped canister marked with the number 6680. The cardboard storage tubes are decorated with red and tan branding and include the slogan Echo all over the World.
Condition report:
Media: Fair. The cylinders exhibit signs of age-related surface dust and the white bloom or mould growth common to early wax recordings, with the Clarion cylinder showing notable surface oxidation. All media is untested for audio playback quality. Canisters: Fair to Good. The cardboard tubes show age-appropriate wear including scuffing, fading, and minor structural damage to some rims and lids. Some paper labels on the lids are partially lost or obscured by surface dirt.
