This lot comprises a personal archive documenting the sporting achievements of R.P. Marks of Plymouth, primarily focused on marathon running and regional billiards. The collection includes a silver-plated or pewter presentation tankard with a C-scroll handle, featuring an applied enamel badge for the Devon County Billiards Association and engraved Billiards text. There is also a fluted gold-toned trophy cup mounted on a square stone plinth, with a central medallion depicting a running figure. The group contains approximately 21 commemorative medals, mostly celebrating South West regional marathons from the early 1980s, including events in Taunton, Torbay, Plymouth, Dartmoor, and Honiton. Some medals feature sponsorship branding from Pepsi Cola and Bass. A significant component is a green ring-bound scrapbook with gilt decoration, which serves as a comprehensive record of the athlete’s career. It contains original race bibs, notably a number E743 from the 1982 London Marathon and number 676 from the 1983 Pepsi Cola Torbay Marathon. The book also includes a 1982 London Marathon official result slip for R.P. Marks recording a time of 04:31:44, an Antex National Dartmoor Marathon certificate, numerous original colour and black-and-white photographs of race starts and finishes, and various printed results sheets and press clippings.
Condition report:
The metalware exhibits moderate to heavy tarnishing and surface oxidation, with some plating loss to the trophy. Medals show general age-related wear and patination. The scrapbook is well-handled with yellowed pages, occasional edge tears, and typical signs of ageing to the adhesives used for mounting items.
