Estimated price: £10 - £20

Buyer's Premium:

A group of vintage walking sticks and umbrellas. The collection includes a wooden walking stick with a hooked handle carved in the form of a bird of prey head and a dark-stained shaft, fitted with a modern grey rubber ferrule. A second walking stick features an L-shaped handle made from a dense off-white material, likely bone or marine ivory, and a light-coloured wooden shaft. This stick is fitted with an ornate sterling silver collar featuring chased and engraved foliate scrolls, bearing London hallmarks for the year 1902 and the maker mark JH for Jonathan Howell. A third wooden walking stick features a bulbous knob handle and a shaft decorated with hand-painted polychrome folk art patterns in black, blue, and red. The collection is completed by two umbrellas with brown fabric canopies and metal shafts, one with a stitched leather hooked handle and one with a polished dark wood hooked handle.

Condition report:

The carved bird head stick shows surface scratches and finish wear throughout. The silver-mounted cane has several visible cracks to the handle at the tip and join, minor denting to the silver collar, and surface scuffs to the shaft. The painted folk art stick shows significant flaking and paint loss. Both umbrellas show dusty fabric and light age-related wear.
