A matching pair of Ardico moulded composite vases of Art Deco design, produced in England. Each vase is of a tapered oval form, featuring a circular flared pedestal base and stylized fin handles protruding from the sides. The bodies are decorated in high relief with a scene of birds in flight above a wetland landscape of reeds and bulrushes, set against a heavily textured repetitive swirl ground. The pieces are finished with hand-painted polychrome decoration in tones of cream, black, red, and yellow-orange. The base of one vase is impressed with a circular manufacturer mark reading ARDICO REGD NO 10 MADE IN ENGLAND.
Condition report:
Both vases are in fair condition with visible signs of wear consistent with age and the fragile nature of the composite material. There are multiple chips to the circular bases, including one significant chip to a foot rim revealing the white substrate beneath. The painted surfaces show general wear, including scattered paint loss, flaking, and scuffing, particularly on the raised relief elements such as the bird wings and reeds. Surface dirt and minor fine crazing are present throughout the finish.
