Lot 138: George Arnold Stockwell for Stolkace, a Ladies' 9 Carat Gold Trench-style Wristwatch, 1919

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £40

Estimated price: £40 - £50

Buyer's Premium:

** A ladies’ mechanical wristwatch of ‘trench’ style, featuring a 9 carat gold three-piece circular case. The interior of the snap-on case back is stamped ‘STOLKACE’ alongside patent number 106859 and the maker’s mark ‘G.A.S’ for George Arnold Stockwell of Stockwell & Co. It bears full British hallmarks for Birmingham, 1919. The watch is powered by a Swiss-made, 15-jewel manual-wind movement with a jewelled lever escapement, marked ‘ADJUSTED’. The cream-coloured enamel dial features black Arabic numerals and blued steel cathedral hands, originally intended for luminous material. The watch is fitted with a heavily worn black silk ribbon strap and base-metal slide buckle. Total gross weight 11.95 grams. Valuation basis: current market price for 9 carat gold scrap combined with recent auction results for early 20th-century ladies’ wristwatches of similar manufacture, adjusted for the current disassembled and non-functional state.

**Condition Report:** The watch is currently disassembled into three case components and the movement. The 9 carat gold case displays numerous fine surface scratches and minor indentations consistent with age. The dial shows significant age-related patina, particularly at the periphery, with minor losses to the painted numerals. The hands are missing their original luminous infill. The mechanical movement appears complete but is currently separated from the case and its functional status is untested; a full service and reassembly are required. The fabric strap is heavily frayed and weakened at the attachment points.

**Estimated Value:** 100 – 150.
