A First World War campaign medal trio and matching ribbon bar awarded to 7079 Private A. Head of the Coldstream Guards. The group consists of a 1914 Star with clasp, a British War Medal, and a Victory Medal with a Mention in Despatches emblem. The 1914 Star is constructed of bronze and features a crown, crossed swords, and a central wreath containing the date 1914 on a scroll, with AUG and NOV above and below. A bronze clasp inscribed 5th AUG.-22nd NOV. 1914 is stitched to the ribbon. The reverse is stamped 7079 PTE A. HEAD. C. GDS. The British War Medal is struck in silver and features the bareheaded effigy of King George V on the obverse and St. George on horseback on the reverse. The edge is impressed 7079 PTE. A. HEAD. C. GDS. The Victory Medal is in bronze and depicts the winged figure of Victory on the obverse with the reverse inscribed THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919 within a wreath. A bronze oak leaf emblem is attached to the ribbon, signifying the recipient was Mentioned in Despatches. The edge is impressed 7079 PTE. A. HEAD. C. GDS. The medals are swing-mounted for wear on a metal pin bar with original ribbons. The accompanying three-space ribbon bar features a silver rosette on the 1914 Star ribbon and a bronze oak leaf on the Victory Medal ribbon.
Condition report:
The 1914 Star shows a dark aged patina with some surface dirt in the recessed details. The silver British War Medal exhibits heavy grey tarnish throughout. The Victory Medal shows moderate toning. The ribbons are original and display significant age-related wear, fading, and fraying, particularly at the top mounting point of the Victory Medal. The ribbon bar is aged and faded.
