A Victorian style cheval firescreen constructed from dark-stained hardwood, featuring a rectangular frame with a carved foliate inner border. The frame houses a needlework textile panel under glass, depicting a stag head finely worked in shades of cream, grey, and brown thread. The structure is supported by twin upright columns with barley-twist turning, each surmounted by a turned finial. These uprights are joined by a matching barley-twist lower stretcher and the unit stands on two splayed trestle feet. The reverse is enclosed by a dark-painted wooden backing board.
Approximate height: 70cm – 90cm.
Condition report:
The textile panel shows significant water staining and foxing along the lower margin. The embroidery appears intact with no visible thread loss. The wooden frame exhibits age-related wear including scuffs, scratches, and minor losses to the dark-stained finish, particularly on the sharp edges of the square joining blocks and the trestle feet. The glass is intact but requires cleaning.
