A George III mahogany bow-front chest of drawers featuring flame mahogany veneers with cross-banded borders and lightwood stringing. The chest is configured with two short drawers above three long, graduated drawers. The drawers are constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints and utilize oak as a secondary wood for the sides and bottoms, with pine used for internal drawer front linings. The drawer bottoms are reinforced with central muntin support rails. The hardware consists of brass oval swing handles with embossed patera backplates and inset brass escutcheons.
Condition report:
This piece is in a well-used condition and requires significant restoration. The top surface displays extensive scratches, scuffs, and multiple prominent circular ring marks. Chipping and losses are present in the mahogany veneers and cross-banding, most notably along the base edge and corners. At least one brass handle and backplate are missing, and the existing hardware shows tarnish. The oak drawer bottoms exhibit staining and longitudinal splitting. Splintering is visible on the interior of one drawer front where a handle has been removed.
