A Swiss military Model 1918 bayonet, a pattern issued for use with the Schmidt-Rubin K11 and K31 carbines. The bayonet features a straight, polished steel blade with a single deep fuller on both sides and a symmetrical spear point, which is sharpened on both edges for the final third of the blade length. The hilt comprises a steel crossguard with an integrated muzzle ring and contoured wooden grip scales secured to the tang by two rivets with slotted nuts. The steel pommel is shaped with a bird’s head profile and contains a spring-loaded push-button catch for attachment to a rifle. The accompanying steel scabbard is finished with a ball-tip finial and a frog stud. The set includes a brown leather frog of stitched and riveted construction, fitted with a small retention strap and buckle. The reverse side of the leather frog is stamped with the characters J and M, with a fainter marking below that appears to read G.4.
Condition report:
The blade is in generally good condition, displaying surface scratching and minor spots of oxidisation and peppering, primarily near the hilt. The wooden grips have darkened with age and show minor indentations from service use. The steel crossguard, pommel, and the entire scabbard exhibit significant surface oxidisation and a dark brown patina. The leather frog is aged and dry, showing surface cracking and wear, particularly to the thinner retention strap.
