A collection of British Royal commemorative ceramics, decorative plates and art glass paperweights including examples signed Friedel. The ceramic items include earthenware commemorative mugs and a beaker decorated with transfer-printed portraits and gilt-edged rims. One mug features a portrait of King Edward VIII with the printed text ‘H.M. KING EDWARD VIII’ and ‘CROWNED 1937 MAY 12’. The collection also includes matching mugs for the 1935 Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary, and a coronation beaker for King George V. The decorative plates feature brightly coloured ceramic scenes, including one depicting the Altes Rathaus with the printed word ‘Munchen’ and a winter landscape signed ‘Friedel’ in script to the lower left.
The art glass paperweights include a latticinio ribbon weight with a yellow and black internal spiral. Other examples include a mottled blue and green speckled weight, a swirl weight in blue, white and black, and a clear glass weight with internal pink or red decoration. This lot comprises the ceramics and glass items only; the two chestnuts shown resting on the plate in the photographs are excluded from the lot.
Condition report:
The collection is in good overall condition. There is light wear visible to the gilt on the rims of the commemorative mugs and beaker (photos 2 and 4), consistent with age. No chips, cracks or repairs are visible on the ceramic plates or glass paperweights in the provided images.
