Start price: £10

Estimated price: £10 - £30

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £60

A nineteenth-century British School style oil painting of two terriers. This lot comprises an oil painting executed on a rigid support, possibly wooden panel or artist board, depicting two rough-coated terriers within a rugged, mountainous landscape evocative of the Scottish Highlands. The composition features a black and tan terrier intently sniffing a burrow while a larger white and tan companion observes. The execution includes detailed brushwork to capture the wiry texture of the animals’ coats against a softer, hazy background of hills. No signatures, dates, or maker’s marks are visible on the painting or the frame. The work is set within a substantial Victorian era ornate gilded composition frame decorated with multiple tiers of decorative mouldings, including egg-and-dart and foliate scrollwork. This lot comprises the framed painting only; the background items shown in the images are not included.

Condition report:

The painting surface exhibits light craquelure and a layer of aged, yellowed varnish throughout (photo 2). Significant losses and chipping to the gesso and gilded surface are visible on the frame, notably at the top-right and bottom-right corners and along the lower horizontal member (photo 1). There is extensive dust and dirt accumulation in the recessed decorative mouldings, and the gilding shows overall rubbing and tarnishing (photo 1).
