A mid-century pastel and chalk portrait study of a mature woman by Basil Brooke. The work is executed on light beige toned wove paper and depicts the sitter from the chest up. The artist has captured the subject with distinctive period accessories, including cat-eye spectacles and large circular earrings, set against a muted blue-grey background that matches her garment. The palette utilises soft peach and ochre tones for the face, contrasted with blended silver-grey for the styled hair. The drawing is inscribed to the lower right Basil Brooke ’66. in dark charcoal or pastel. It is housed in a simple narrow wooden frame with a rope hanging attachment to the top edge.
Condition report:
A small brown spot, likely foxing or a liquid stain, is visible at the bottom centre margin of the paper support just above the frame edge (photo 1). The paper exhibits overall age-related toning across the sheet (photo 2). The wooden frame shows minor surface scuffs and light wear to the corners consistent with age (photo 2). The pastel medium appears stable with no evidence of significant smudging or pigment loss (photo 2).
