This lot comprises one early 20th-century style wardrobe steamer trunk. The trunk is constructed from a wooden frame, possibly plywood, covered in a dark blue or black vulcanised fibre style material with reinforced metal binding and rounded corner guards. The interior is divided into two sections; one side contains a retractable metal rail with four shaped wooden hangers, while the opposite side is empty and features an elasticated fabric pocket at the base. The interior is lined throughout with a decorative black fabric featuring a repeating blue and white floral and geometric pattern. The exterior is stencilled with large serif-style characters in grey paint reading H.T.J. The trunk is fitted with brass-toned metal hardware, including latches and protective studs, and a thick leather carry handle is mounted to the side. This lot comprises the empty trunk only; the furniture and other background items shown in the images are not included.
Condition report:
The trunk shows significant signs of age and utilitarian use. The exterior surface has extensive scuffing, scratches, and loss of finish (photo 1 and 3). The metal hardware shows significant oxidation, surface rust, and loss of the original brass-toned plating (photo 1). The leather carry handle is worn and dry-cracked, though it remains attached (photo 1). The interior lining shows light soiling and bunching in the corners (photo 2). The trunk is missing its original internal drawer inserts from the right-hand compartment (photo 2).
