An assortment of Sri Lankan and West African style carved wooden decorative items. The group comprises traditional Sri Lankan Raksha masks, carved musician figures, and a large black-finished female figure. The masks are hand-carved from wood with vibrant polychrome paint, featuring cobra, peacock, and flame motifs, and are constructed with detachable wing components. The smaller figures depict musicians, including a drummer and a wind instrument player. The largest piece is a West African style carved wooden figure, possibly representing an Ashanti Akua’ba fertility doll, featuring a characteristic flattened circular head, ringed neck, and stylised torso. The items are finished with various matte and semi-gloss paints, while the larger figure features a dark ebonised-style finish with incised geometric decoration. No makers marks or signatures are visible on the front surfaces of the pieces.
Condition report:
The collection is in good overall condition with signs of age-appropriate wear. Minor paint chips and scuffs are visible on the edges and tips of the mask wings (Photo 1). There is some dust accumulation in the carved crevices across all items. The large black figure shows minor surface scratches and rubbing to the finish, particularly on the chest and arms (Photo 2).
