A large Spode Blue Italian pattern earthenware Dutch jug, featuring an underglaze blue transfer-printed design. The bulbous body is decorated with classical Italianate ruins in a pastoral landscape with cattle and figures, bordered by an intricate floral and foliate scrollwork pattern at the rim and handle. The base bears a printed black backstamp reading Spode, MADE IN, ENGLAND, ITALIAN, SPODE DESIGN, C. 1816. U. The reference to 1816 denotes the pattern’s original release date, while the backstamp format indicates a late 20th-century manufacture. The piece is constructed from heavy white earthenware with a clear glaze finish.
