Lot 525: A Large Green Hand Blown Glass Demijohn

This auction ended on September 2, 2026.

Start price: £8

Estimated price: £8 - £12

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £10

A large green hand blown glass demijohn of bulbous, near-spherical form. This vessel is constructed from transparent medium green glass and features a short neck finished with a thick, applied reinforced rim. The piece displays characteristic manufacturing features including numerous small air bubbles, known as seeds, and a slightly irregular, wavy surface texture typical of hand-worked glass. The base is formed with a deep conical kick-up, and the overall shape follows an ovoid or onion profile. No maker’s marks, labels, or country of origin stamps are visible on the neck, body, or rim of the vessel. This lot comprises the glass demijohn only; the furniture and other background items shown in the images are not included.

Condition report:

The demijohn is in good overall condition consistent with age and utility. A prominent vertical line is visible on the neck and rim (photo 1 and photo 2), which appears to be a manufacturing fold or seam rather than a post-production fissure. The glass body contains numerous small seeds and swirling manufacturing marks. There are scattered light surface scratches and scuffs to the body and base, and some internal residue and light clouding is visible (photo 1).
