This lot comprises a framed watercolour and gouache landscape painting by Rex James titled Silver Birches at Burrator. The work is executed on paper and depicts a cluster of silver birches in the foreground with fine white bodycolour bark details and splattered autumnal foliage in shades of ochre and burnt sienna. The background features a misty, tonal representation of the Burrator Reservoir and Dartmoor hills in soft greys and blues. The painting is marked REX JAMES. in black ink to the lower right corner. The reverse bears a rectangular white adhesive label from the Barbican Gallery, The Parade, The Barbican, Plymouth, Devon, PL1 2JW, with the artist and title information and a retail price of £ 90.00. Additional handwritten inscriptions on the backboard read BIRCH TREES AT BURRATOR and X No 431. The painting is presented in a white and cream double mount within a gold-toned metal frame behind glass.


Condition report:

The watercolour appears in good condition with no visible signs of foxing, staining, or fading to the paper or pigments (photo 1). There is a small amount of dust ingress trapped beneath the glass near the mount edges (photo 2). The gold-toned metal frame exhibits light surface wear and minor scuffing to the edges (photo 1).
