A gilt framed gold foil world map wall clock marked Aquarius featuring a reproduction of a seventeenth-century cartographic print. The piece displays a double-hemisphere world map design on a metallic gold-effect substrate. The top centre is inscribed Nova Orbis Tabula, in lucem edita, a F. de Wit. An integrated white circular dial is located at the top centre, bearing the printed words Aquarius and Quartz. It is detailed with black Roman numeral hour markers and an outer track with Arabic minute numerals at five-minute intervals. The clock is fitted with black filigree style hands. The cartographic design includes landmasses tinted in pink, green, and yellow, with allegorical scenes in the four corners depicting various figures and animals. The bottom margin is printed with the text World Map by Frederick de Wit 1616-1698. The clock is set within a large ornate gold-toned composite frame with a stepped and beaded profile. To the rear is a quartz battery-operated movement.
Condition report:
The gold-toned frame is in good condition with minor surface dust. A small white rectangular mark, appearing to be sticker residue, is visible on the bottom centre edge of the frame (photo 1). The print is well-preserved behind the glass and shows no signs of warping or damp. The movement is untested and will require a new battery to confirm operation.
