This lot comprises three hand-painted ceramic Toby jugs including examples by Kevin Francis Ceramics and Peggy Davies Ceramics. The collection features a large figure titled ‘The Santa Toby’, depicting Father Christmas in a vibrant red suit holding a brown teddy bear and a sack of toys. This piece is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from ‘Kevin Francis Ceramics Ltd’ for model ‘KF.15’, which identifies the sculptor as ‘Geoff Blower’ and states a limited edition of 1500 worldwide. The documentation notes the piece was ‘Fired twice in order to achieve the brightest possible red’ and bears the printed signatures of ‘KEVIN J. PEARSON’ and ‘FRANCIS J. SALMON’ under a date of ‘© 1989 KEVIN FRANCIS CERAMICS’. Also included is a matched pair comprising a standard and a matching miniature version of ‘The Thin Man’, each depicted in a pale green coat and white tricorn hat. These are accompanied by a certificate from ‘Peggy Davies CERAMICS’ identifying ‘The Thin Man’ as the ‘Toby Jug of the Year 1997’, modelled by ‘Andy Moss’ in a limited edition of 250 worldwide. The certificate describes the piece as a ‘faithful copy of an original 1780’s toby jug’ and notes the manufacturer was ‘ESTABLISHED 1987’.
Condition report:
The three jugs appear to be in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or signs of restoration across any of the figures (photo 1). The hand-painted finishes are bright and the glazes remain intact. The accompanying certificates of authenticity are present and appear well-preserved (photos 2 and 3).
