The base of this jug carries a green printed backstamp reading GENUINE STAFFORDSHIRE HAND PAINTED SHORTER&SON LTD ENGLAND, with an incised rectangular mark below reading PIRATE above PATENT APPLIED FOR. The two Falstaff figures depict the character seated with two tankards of ale, wearing burgundy garments. Both pieces bear a black printed Royal Doulton backstamp comprising a lion atop a crown and a circular emblem. One base is printed FALSTAFF in block capitals with the numeral 23, while the other is marked Sir John Falstaff. in cursive script with the numeral 7.
Condition report:
The pirate figure exhibits fine-line crazing throughout the glaze (photo 6). There is significant brown staining visible within the cream-coloured interior of the hat and spout (photo 2). The two Falstaff figures appear to be in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations. Minor shelf wear is present on the unglazed foot rims of the Falstaff jugs (photos 10 and 14).
