This lot comprises six vintage and commemorative plush toys, including examples by Merrythought, Hamleys, and Avon. The collection features a traditional jointed teddy bear constructed with golden-brown mohair style fur, black plastic eyes, and a hand-stitched black nose. It is finished with a silver-toned ribbon and is marked to a yellow woven label on the sole of the right foot reading MERRYTHOUGHT, IRONBRIDGE SHROPS., MADE IN ENGLAND. A white fabric side-seam tag is transcribed MERRYTHOUGHT, IRONBRIDGE SHROPS., MADE IN ENGLAND, CONTENTS, ALL NEW MATERIALS, REG NO P.A. 169. Also included is a shaggy light-brown Hamleys teddy bear wearing a red knitted snowflake motif sweater. This bear is embroidered with Hamleys in red script to the right foot and a red fabric label embroidered Limited Edition to the left. It retains a cardboard swing tag reading THE FINEST TOYS, Hamleys, EST. LONDON 1760, IN THE WORLD and a red tush tag transcribed MADE IN CHINA, HAMLEYS, LONDON W1B 5BT. A commemorative Avon bear features shaggy tan fur with a pink satin ribbon and is embroidered AVON 125 years to the left foot. The group is completed by a plush Jane Hissey style giraffe with orange-red spots and a fabric tag reading Jane Hissey’s OLD BEAR AND FRIENDS JOLLY TALL, and a two-toned grey and pink clown style teddy bear wearing a red felt hat and green ruffled collar.
Condition report:
The collection is in good, clean condition across all five items. The Merrythought bear, Hamleys bear, and Jane Hissey style giraffe retain their original manufacturer labels and tags as shown in the detail photographs (photos 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 14, and 16). There is no significant balding, staining, or structural damage visible. The embroidery on the Avon and Hamleys bears remains crisp and bright.
