A trio of three British school watercolours including two works by Bate. This lot comprises three landscape paintings, consisting of a pair of mountainous highland scenes and a single coastal estuary view. Each work is executed in watercolour and bodycolour on paper. The mountainous landscapes depict rugged terrain with craggy outcrops and valleys; both are marked in the lower right corner with a cursive signature reading Bate with a horizontal flourish extending from the base of the capital B. The coastal landscape shows a wide estuary at low tide featuring a small boat and figures on the flats; it is marked in the lower left corner with a monogram reading JHG followed by the date 1910. All three works are housed in decorative gilt gesso frames with paper mounts.

Condition report:

All three paper mounts exhibit significant foxing and brown spotting across the surfaces (photo 1, 3, 5). The coastal scene mount displays heavy mat burn and acid toning (photo 3). The watercolour pigments show moderate light fading consistent with age across all three works. Minor dust and debris are trapped behind the glass in each frame. The gilt gesso frames show minor surface wear, small chips, and losses to the gilt finish, particularly on the corners and molded edges (photo 1, 5).
