A collection of mixed cutlery and flatware comprising cased sets and loose serving pieces of various materials. This lot includes a set of six knives featuring carved mother-of-pearl handles and hallmarked silver blades. The blades bear stamped marks in individual cartouches comprising a crown, a lion passant, and a lowercase letter q, indicating they were assayed in Sheffield. There is a boxed set of six table knives with bone-effect celluloid handles and blades marked Stainless Steel / Sheffield England. A further boxed set of six table knives features cream-coloured handles and blades marked Smith Seymour Ltd / Sheffield. A boxed set of six dessert knives by Bennet & Heron is included, with blades marked SHEFFIELD / Bennet & Heron / ENGLAND / STAINLESS DE-LUXE / HAND GROUND. A boxed set of six all-metal fish knives with a modernist profile is housed in a blue cardboard case.
Loose items include several silver-plated serving spoons with embossed fruit and floral decoration to the bowls, a decorative serving fork with a three-tined head and mother-of-pearl handle, and various bundled spoons and forks in Fiddle and Old English patterns. Notable markings on the loose items include a stamped mark reading S. L. & S. (SHEFFIELD) LTD CUTLERS. The collection features a mix of stainless steel, silver-plated, and hallmarked silver components.
Condition report:
Heavy tarnish is visible on the silver blades of the mother-of-pearl handled knives (photo 2). A visible crack is present on one bone-effect celluloid knife handle in a yellow-lined box (photo 2). The boxed sets show general wear, ageing, and staining to the cardboard and fabric linings (photo 1, 3, 7). Loose pieces exhibit surface scratching, minor pitting, and tarnish consistent with age and regular use (photo 4, 5, 8).
