This lot comprises a hand-carved hardwood possibly ebony African elephant figurine. The piece is a stylised yet detailed representation of an African elephant, presented in a standing position with its trunk lowered and a walking gait. The figurine is carved from a dense, dark hardwood with a smooth, polished finish, possibly ebony or a similarly dark-stained tropical wood. The animal features large, prominent ears and defined tusks which are carved as part of the main body rather than as separate inserts. The figurine exhibits a consistent dark colour and fine grain throughout. No maker’s marks, signatures, or original manufacturer labels are visible on the exterior of the carving.
Condition report:
The figure shows signs of handling and surface wear. There are several light-coloured surface scuffs and abrasions, most notably along the top of the head and the spine (photo 1), and on the rump (photo 2). The overall structure appears sound with no visible cracks, chips to the extremities, or evidence of repairs.
