A collection of late 19th to early 20th-century ceramic tablewares and utility vessels. The group includes institutional style vitrified china comprising one side plate and two teacups with matching saucers, each decorated with a blue transfer-printed shield emblem featuring the letters P, S, C, and G arranged in a cross within the shield. Also included is an assortment of glazed stoneware jars, one of which features an impressed mark to the base reading NOT GENUINE UNLESS BEARING WM P. HARTLEY’S LABEL FMF, indicating production for the British preserve manufacturer. The lot further comprises a transfer-printed sauce boat on a matching stand and a larger oval serving bowl, both featuring floral and scroll borders in blue and polychrome with gilded rims. A large, deep circular earthenware basin with a flared rim completes the group.
Condition report:
The institutional china shows visible surface wear and scratches consistent with use (photo 1). One stoneware jar has a significant chip at the base (photo 3) and all three jars exhibit surface staining and manufacturing pitting typical of utilitarian stoneware. The transfer-printed serving pieces show noticeable rubbing and wear to the gilded rims (photo 3). The large white basin displays crazing and minor staining to the interior surface (photo 1).
