A collection of tin-glazed earthenware (faience) comprising several items of tableware and multiple decorative tiles. The tableware group includes a large twin-handled tureen, a teacup and saucer, a circular covered butter or cheese dish, two plates, and a small bowl. These pieces are decorated in the Petit Breton style with figures in traditional regional costume surrounded by stylized floral sprays and banded borders in yellow and blue. One teacup features hand-painted characters to the base reading HB QUIMPER, indicating manufacture at the Hubaudière-Bousquet factory in Brittany, France.
The collection also includes nine thick square earthenware tiles. Eight of these depict individual musicians in 18th-century style dress, including frock coats and tricorne hats, playing instruments such as the bagpipes, flute, violin, lute, and cello. A ninth, larger tile features a bird amongst floral sprigs in the Vieux Rouen style. The tiles are decorated in a high-temperature palette of manganese purple, copper green, antimony yellow, and cobalt blue.
Condition report:
The collection shows various signs of wear and damage consistent with age and use. The bagpiper tile has a significant vertical crack running through the centre (photo 1). Several tiles exhibit chips to the edges and corners, and all show visible crazing to the glaze (photo 2). Regarding the tableware, the tureen has a large chip to the rim and a smaller chip to one handle (photo 3). The plates and bowl exhibit numerous rim chips and flakes to the glaze along the edges (photo 3). The covered dish appears to have a small chip on the knob finial (photo 3).
