A George III style serpentine front mahogany sideboard featuring flame mahogany veneers and satinwood or boxwood crossbanded edges. The piece is constructed with a curved top surface displaying a wide crossbanded border and fine inner stringing. The front configuration comprises a central bowed drawer positioned above an arched apron, flanked by a deep cellarette drawer on the right and a cupboard door on the left. The drawers are constructed with dovetail joints and have internal linings showing signs of heavy use. The sideboard is supported by six square-tapered legs terminating in spade feet. The unit is fitted with octagonal pressed brass drop-ring handles and brass escutcheons, with inset brass locks present on the cupboard and drawers. No maker’s marks, labels, or signatures are visible on the piece.
Condition report:
The sideboard is in fair to good condition with visible signs of age and regular use. The top surface shows numerous shallow scratches, multiple water rings, and some areas of fading to the finish (photo 3). There are visible chips and small areas of loss to the veneer along the edges of the crossbanding (photo 8). The internal drawer linings show heavy staining and wear consistent with age (photo 4). The brass handle on the left cupboard door appears slightly misaligned or loose (photo 1). The brass lock plates show some tarnishing and surface wear (photo 6).
