Sold for: £20
An Anglo-Japanese style carved wood side table or plant stand, typical of the late 19th or early 20th-century Japonisme aesthetic. The piece is constructed from a dark-stained hardwood base with a square top panel of a lighter-toned wood, possibly fruitwood or oak. The top features an incised and wood-burned pyrography design depicting a trailing vine with leaves and scrolling tendrils, enclosed within a simple linear border. The substructure includes an apron decorated with pierced-carved foliate fretwork, supported by four tall cabriole legs with decorative scroll motifs at the knees and feet. These legs house a lower square undershelf featuring an intricate openwork design of pierced floral and foliate scrolls around a central circular reserve. No manufacturer marks or signatures are visible to the underside or frame. This lot comprises the table only;
Condition report:
The table is in fair to poor antique condition. The top wood panel exhibits a significant structural split running vertically through the centre of the decorative design, resulting in warping and lifting of the wood surface (photo 3). There is visible wear to the finish throughout the piece, including abrasions and loss of stain on the cabriole legs, particularly towards the scroll feet (photo 6). The lower pierced-carved shelf shows surface scratches and uneven colouration (photo 4). The top surface displays various small scratches and marks consistent with age and drying of the timber.
