This lot comprises a portable hand-crank sewing machine and a separate small utility cabinet containing an assortment of sewing and knitting notions. The sewing machine is a Jones Family C model featuring a cast iron body with a black enamel finish and gilt-transfer floral decals. The machine arm is marked in gold-tone letters JONES and includes a circular badge stating AS SUPPLIED TO HER MAJESTY QUEEN ALEXANDRA. It is mounted on a wooden base with a matching bentwood coffin-style cover, possibly constructed of oak or walnut. The accompanying wooden utility cabinet features a dark stained finish, two faux-drawer panels with integrated handles, and a fall-front door supported by a metal chain and lined with red fabric. The cabinet contains a quantity of vintage sewing and knitting supplies including knitting needles in original packaging marked PHILWARD’S TOM, AERO, MORRALL’S, and BEL, alongside a large spool of natural fiber twine and various paper patterns. This lot comprises the sewing machine and cabinet with cabinet contents.
Condition report:
The wooden sewing machine cover shows significant surface wear, including deep scratches, finish loss, and abrasions (photo 4). The machine body exhibits loss to the gilt decals and surface oxidation on the hand wheel and metal slide plates (photo 3). The utility cabinet shows heavy scuffing, paint loss, and scratches to the exterior (photo 1). The interior fabric lining is intact with minor dust and signs of age (photo 2). The mechanical operation of the hand-crank has not been tested.
