A collection of architectural and art history books and professional black and white photography. The literature includes a hardcover edition of The Country Life Book of Castles and Houses in Britain with a foreword by the Duke of Devonshire, Jonathan Foyle’s Canterbury Cathedral: Architecture and Meaning, and Giles Waterfield’s Palaces of Art: Art Galleries in Britain 1790–1990. Also present are large format volumes including The Holy Land featuring lithographs by David Roberts and a German language edition titled Klassisches Griechenland, alongside Eric Newby’s The Last Grain Race. The photography component comprises a significant group of professional black and white prints, some mounted on heavy black card stock. Several mounted photographs bear typed labels on the left margin reading John Bethel: Photography, 33 North Audley St., London W.1., with one further inscribed Bavaria: Monastery courtyard with post-warish church. The subjects include religious processions, candid portraiture, and social gatherings. The lot also includes a pack of Ilford Professional Smooth Fine Art Paper, A3+ size, 190g/m2, which appears to have been opened.
Condition report:
The books generally show minor shelf wear and scuffing to the dust jackets, consistent with handling (photo 1). The Canterbury Cathedral softcover shows light edge wear (photo 3). The photography collection is in good vintage condition; some loose prints exhibit curling at the corners and the black mounting boards show minor edge wear and surface scuffs (photo 2). The Ilford paper packaging shows signs of opening and handling (photo 4).
