Sold for: £40
A utilitarian three drawer apothecary style chest of drawers, constructed from solid softwood, possibly pine. This bank of drawers features a horizontal three-drawer configuration within a simple dark-stained casing. The drawers are built with thick solid wood fronts and sides, finished with turned wooden knobs and small metal-lined keyholes positioned to the left of the pulls. The unit is finished in a dark brown stain which shows significant evidence of historical use and wear. The interior of the drawers shows a natural wood grain with heavy staining and remnants of previous finishes. No manufacturer marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the surfaces shown. This lot comprises the wooden chest of drawers only.
Condition report:
The chest is in a worn, as-found condition consistent with utilitarian use. The top and sides exhibit numerous surface scratches, deep gouges, and abrasions (photo 1). There is a significant vertical split in the wood on the right-hand side of the main casing (photo 1). The dark-stained finish is heavily distressed throughout with extensive areas of loss and staining, particularly to the drawer fronts and edges. The turned wooden hardware shows significant wear, with the central knob displaying more paint or finish loss than the others (photo 1). The interior of the drawers shows heavy dark staining and general grime (photo 2).
