Estimated price: £70 - £100

Sold for: £145

A George III style mahogany bachelor chest of compact proportions, featuring a rectangular top with a moulded edge over a configuration of four long drawers. The piece is constructed from mahogany with a rich patina, utilizing oak or pine as secondary woods for the drawer linings. The uppermost drawer is a fall-front secretaire, which opens on brass quadrant stays to reveal an interior fitted with pigeonholes and small stationary drawers featuring brass pulls. The chest is supported by bracket feet with a shaped apron. The drawer fronts are decorated with brass swan-neck bale handles on pierced backplates and matching escutcheons. No manufacturer marks or signatures are present on the piece. This lot comprises the chest only.

Condition report:

The chest shows significant signs of age and previous repair throughout. The top surface exhibits numerous deep scratches, scuffs, and areas of finish loss, alongside visible circular ring marks and staining (photo 8). The secretaire interior shows heavily worn and dusty green felt lining (photo 2). Several detached decorative mouldings and loose pieces of wood are stored inside the drawer, indicating internal structural damage (photo 2). A black plastic wedge has been inserted near one hinge to stabilise the fall-front mechanism (photo 6). The brass quadrant stays and hinges show oxidisation and surface wear (photo 5). The bracket feet exhibit scuffing and wear consistent with floor contact (photo 7).
