This lot comprises two antique utilitarian stoneware vessels featuring a traditional two-tone Bristol salt glaze with honey-brown upper sections and cream-coloured bodies. The first item is a large spirit or cider barrel of cylindrical form with a domed top, a single loop handle at the shoulder, and a circular bung-hole located near the base. The top aperture is fitted with a natural cork. The second item is a wide-mouthed storage jar featuring two moulded lug handles and a decorative impressed chain-link band around the shoulder. This jar bears an impressed mark on the shoulder consisting of the numeral ’10’ above two lines of text reading ‘J. C. HANLEY’ and ‘BRISTOL’. The interior of the jar is fully glazed.

Condition report:

The stoneware barrel shows visible surface staining and dark discoloration to the cream-coloured lower section (photo 1). There is minor wear and small abrasions around the rim of the basal tap-hole (photo 3). The storage jar remains in good structural condition with no visible cracks or large chips. Minor surface pitting and small firing imperfections are present, consistent with the manufacturing process, along with light staining to the base (photo 2).
