Estimated price: £20 - £40

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £18

An oil painting on stretched canvas depicting a ballerina, possibly Margo Fonteyn. The figure is captured in a graceful pose with one arm raised, wearing a pale blue dress and pink point shoes. The subject is set against a dark brown backdrop featuring vertical strokes of light blue and white, suggestive of cascading water, and is framed by delicate foliage in shades of green and blue. The work is executed with visible, expressive brushwork in the costume and background, contrasting with the more refined and delicate rendering of the dancer’s facial features. The canvas is housed in a substantial, ornate gilded and patinated composite frame with scrollwork corners and edges. No signature is visible on the primary face of the work. The verso shows a modern wooden stretcher with metal staples and corner reinforcements. Handwritten in black ink on the lower edge of the white wooden frame backing are the characters “H 75”.

Height: 103 cm
Width: 61 cm.

Condition report:

The painting shows localized areas of paint loss and minor abrasions within the dark brown background to the right of the figure (photo 6). There is a visible accumulation of surface dirt and dust across the canvas and frame. The ornate frame has several areas of chipping and loss to the gilded finish, most notably at the lower right corner (photo 6) and along the outer edges (photo 2). The hanging wire on the verso shows mild oxidation.
