A collection of decorative folding hand fans comprising various materials and styles, including examples made in the People’s Republic of China. The assortment features two Asian pleated paper fans; one with a white leaf decorated with a bird and flowering branches, mounted on black plastic sticks, and another with a scalloped edge featuring a rose pattern on wooden sticks. A circular red stamp on the white paper fan contains characters in Chinese script with the English words MADE IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA below. The rose pattern fan bears the printed text MADE IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA and PEKING.

The collection further includes several souvenir style fans featuring fabric or paper leaves printed with European topographical scenes, such as Venetian gondolas and architectural landmarks, finished with machine-made lace borders. One fan features a black leaf with a figurative scene and black lace trim on gold-tone detailed plastic sticks. Several brisé style fans are present, constructed from cream-coloured and white moulded plastic designed to simulate carved ivory, featuring intricate openwork floral and geometric patterns. One cream-coloured plastic fan includes a small circular topographical insert at the guard and is held with a red ribbon. A small white fabric fan features gold-tone printed scrollwork and white lace. One fan has a white paper tag attached to the rivet reading PEKINS.

The items are in fair to good vintage condition. Visible wear includes creasing and small tears to the paper leaves (photo 1). There is minor fraying to the machine-made lace edges on the souvenir fans (photo 3). The plastic components, particularly the brisé style fans, show light surface dirt and yellowing consistent with age (photo 2). The wooden sticks on the floral paper fan show minor surface wear (photo 2).
