A collection of vintage British advertising and souvenir tins, primarily constructed from lithographed tinplate. The assortment includes tobacco tins such as a rectangular light blue lid tin for Player’s Medium Navy Cut, featuring a printed sailor logo to the interior and text for John Player and Sons, and an Ogden’s St. Julien tobacco tin in dark blue and white. Confectionery examples include a Tucker’s Butter Scotch tin decorated with a lithographed image of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and a yellow tin for Safety First Iodised Throat Lozenges. The lot also features gramophone needle tins including a red Broadcast tin with a partial white paper seal and a red His Master’s Voice tin featuring the Nipper the dog logo. Additional items include an octagonal tin with coastal scenes, a novelty trunk-style box with faux strapping, a small circular portrait tin, and a carved wooden figure or pipe stand.


Condition report:

The collection is in varied condition ranging from fair to poor. Significant surface oxidation and rust are visible on the octagonal tin (photo 1) and the novelty trunk box (photo 3). The tobacco and needle tins show varying degrees of paint loss, surface scratches, and edge rubbing, with notable wear to the St. Julien tin (photo 1) and HMV tin (photo 2). The paper seal on the Broadcast tin is broken (photo 2). The Butter Scotch tin exhibits surface dulling and oxidation (photo 2).
