A marine oil on board painting titled Running Into Heavy Weather by the British artist Dennis George Thomas. The work depicts a multi-masted wooden sailing vessel, possibly a galleon style ship, navigating through turbulent turquoise and white-capped seas. The composition features an expressive use of impasto and textured brushwork, set against a dramatic, hazy sky rendered in muted tones of pink, grey, and brown. The painting is signed in the lower right corner in yellow paint as DENNIS THOMAS 1979. The reverse of the board bears a white paper exhibition label from The Mall Galleries (The Federation of British Artists) which includes the handwritten title of the work, the artist’s full name as Mr. Dennis George Thomas, and an address in High Wycombe, Bucks. The medium is stated on the label as oil. The painting is housed in a decorative gilt finished wood frame featuring molded rope and leaf patterns.
Width: 40 cm
Height: 34 cm.
Condition report:
The oil painting is in good overall condition with some visible surface dirt and minor abrasions consistent with age (photo 1). Small green specks, possibly surface deposits or minor losses to the paint layer, are visible in the upper right quadrant of the sky and the lower right sea (photos 4 and 5). The gilt finished frame shows small chips and wear to the finish, particularly at the corner joints (photo 2). The reverse exhibition label is partially toned with some minor staining and remains adhered to the backing board (photo 6).
